Digital trust

The Government’s move to walk back from its directions to mobile phone manufacturers, ordering them to install a government app, highlights two issues. The first is citizen anxiety and the second is about the concerns raised by phone manufacturers, who warned that mandatory pre-loading could compromise user choice, add technical burdens, and set a troubling precedent. This is a moment that offers India a chance to strengthen its privacy framework. Countries such as Estonia have systems that show what transparent, accountable digital systems can achieve — citizens can see who accessed their data and why, with strict penalties for misuse. Ultimately, trust will grow only when policies are consultative, purpose-driven, and backed by strong safeguards. With accountability, digital initiatives can empower citizens without compromising privacy.

Flight chaos

The recent mass cancellations of hundreds of flights by India’s largest private airline have highlighted serious flaws in operational planning. Travellers, including those on business and urgent personal trips, faced confusion and financial loss. While the airline has cited technical, regulatory and weather challenges, repeated disruptions suggest a deeper management issue. Should not a reputed carrier ensure contingency measures to safeguard its passengers? Moreover, why is customer communication still inconsistent, leaving passengers frustrated? The public expects reliability, accountability and transparency, clear guidelines and compensation policies. In a service-driven industry, airlines must take responsibility rather than leaving travellers to face acute distress.
