A 74-year-old woman, who had been suffering from severe back pain for several months, has found relief after a complicated spinal surgery performed at KIMS Hospital, Kurnool. The pain had gradually worsened over the years, spreading to her legs, making it nearly impossible for her to stand, sit for more than five minutes, or walk even short distances. For the past three months, she was completely bedridden and had to rely on a wheelchair for movement.
The woman Saalamma from Guntakal was brought to KIMS Hospital in Kurnool, where Consultant Spine Surgeon Dr. Shaik Mannan examined her condition in detail.
“After conducting several diagnostic tests including MRI scans, we found that she had chronic compression fractures in the D11 and D12 vertebrae of her spine. Over time, the condition had worsened, causing degeneration in surrounding areas and leading to spinal deformity,” explained Dr. Mannan.
To address the condition, doctors decided to perform a highly complex spinal surgery, which lasted for six hours. A total of 19 titanium dual-threaded screws were used to realign and stabilize her spine.
“We were able to straighten the previously deformed spine and bring it back to its normal posture. Ms. Saalamma stayed in the hospital for just five days post-surgery. The titanium screws used do not require removal and pose no risk of infection. Additionally, they are MRI-compatible. If needed, they can be removed after two years,” he added.
Following the surgery, Ms. Saalamma’s condition improved significantly. She can now sit comfortably for over an hour, and her leg pain has completely subsided. She is also able to stand and walk short distances. However, due to her weakened bones, doctors advised her not to walk for at least two months. She is currently undergoing physiotherapy at her home in Guntakal and is on medication to strengthen her bones.
