Andhra Pradesh will see above-normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon, according to the India Meteorological Department forecast.
The previous year, too, the State recorded 21% excess rainfall between June 1 and September 30. Except for 10 districts, the others recorded excess rainfall, as per information from the IMD, Amaravati.
An updated forecast for the southwest monsoon would be released by May-end.
At present, the State is receiving isolated rain and thunderstorms in the peak summer month of April due to discontinuity in wind, providing relief from heat to the people.
However, temperatures might shoot up next month, said IMD-Amaravati Director S. Stella. “But if there are more wind disturbances, there will be a change in weather once again,” she said, adding that the forecast for May would be updated in the last week of April.
“The IMD’s former prediction of above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures for the State in summer holds good, since, despite rains, the temperatures in the State are above normal on an average in a month,” she said.
On April 16, Wednesday, the maximum temperatures in all stations of the IMD, except for Kadapa and Anantapur, recorded below 40 degree Celsius. The IMD forecast rain, accompanied with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, up to April 20, due to different troughs.
Between 8.30 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, many stations in Anakapalli, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Kakinada and Nellore districts received light to moderate rainfall. Cheedikada in Anakapalli received the day’s maximum of 42.5 mm rainfall, followed by Poolathota in Tirupati district that received 41 mm rain, Gaadhirai in Anakapalli received 36.5 mm rain, Dalapathiguda in Alluri Sitharama Raju recorded 33.5 mm, Chimathur in Sri Sathya Sai received 22.5 mm, among others, as per realtime rainfall information on the Andhra Pradesh State Development Planning Society.
