Modern diet fads often take the limelight, due to which traditional superfoods get overlooked. One such traditional superfood is horsegram or Kollu. Kollu is a humble legume with exceptional nutritional value. Kollu is known to be one of the most protein-rich lentils. Spiritual leader Sadhguru, in one of his Youtube videos, explains why horsegram is a wonderful addition to your diet. Sadguru says, Race horses are fed this gram and that is how Kollu got its modern name ‘Horsegram’. Kollu is the lentil’s Tamil name.
Sprouted horsegram

Sadhguru explains that sprouting Kollu can help digest it much more easily.How to sprout Kollu:
- Put Kollu in a bowl of water
- Soak for about six to eight hours
- Tie in a cloth and keep it closed for about three days
- After three days, the Kollu will sprout about half an inch
It can be eaten raw. Sadhguru adds that Kollu takes a lot of chewing.
Kollu has a lot of heat
Some body signs that can tell that the consumed Kollu is generating excessive heat and feeling the urge to pee. For example, Sadhguru reveals, you may notice heat in eye balls. He recommends these three things to balance the heat:
- You can eat sprouted green grams
- Drink ash gourd juice
- Apply castor oil inside the naval, forehead or behind the ears
He adds that these practices can help calm the system instantly. “Eating with care and watching what the body needs will enable the body in many ways. It’s a conscious management” adds Sadhguru.
