Gurugram has become the first city in India to introduce a QR code-based kiosk for digital payment of traffic challans, a facility aimed at making the challan payment process faster and simpler.

The kiosk, developed jointly by the Gurugram police and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), was set up at Ambience Mall and inaugurated on Saturday by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rajesh Mohan.

“For the first time in the country, traffic challan payments can be made through QR code-based kiosk machines. This facility will be extremely beneficial for shoppers visiting a busy location like Ambience Mall,” said Mr. Mohan.

The kiosk, established under a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, allows drivers to check and pay their outstanding challans by entering their vehicle number and scanning a QR code. Payments for challans pending in court or overdue by more than 90 days, however, cannot be made through the machine.

Mr. Mohan said similar kiosks will soon be installed at other high-footfall locations in the city after assessing the success of this pilot project. “This initiative will not only ease the workload of traffic police but also enhance citizen convenience through digital technology,” he added.

A trial run of the video-based emergency call points was also conducted earlier this month by Police Commissioner Vikas Arora and Mr. Mohan. These emergency call points will be linked to dial 112 and the Police Commissioner’s Control Room, and will operate round the clock. Each unit will be equipped with beacon lights for visibility, and allow citizens to connect via video call to report emergencies or request help at the press of a button.
