Gujarat police partners with indigenous app MapmyIndia for real-time traffic alerts, road safety

To enhance road safety and streamline traffic management across Gujarat, the State Traffic Branch has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MapmyIndia (Mappls), India’s indigenous digital mapping and navigation platform.

The initiative follows directions issued by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who also holds Home portfolio, during a recent review meeting under the ‘Har Ghar Swadeshi, Ghar Ghar Swadeshi’ campaign, where he urged all departments to prioritise indigenous technological solutions.

Acting on it, Director General of Police Vikas Sahay, the State Traffic Branch, formalised the agreement with Mappls to integrate real-time traffic intelligence into the widely used navigation app, officials said.

As part of the collaboration, Mappls has introduced enhanced citizen-centric features in its app. “Users will now receive real-time traffic advisory updates, covering black spots, accident-prone zones, and speed limits, alongside regular navigation. Critical inputs on black spots and accident zones, furnished by the State Traffic Branch, have been incorporated into the app to help drivers anticipate risk-prone stretches and exercise caution,” they said.

Speed limit data has also been updated to reduce overspeeding and prevent avoidable incidents, particularly on poorly lit roads, officials said.

Under the MoU, Gujarat Police will share daily, real-time traffic updates with MapmyIndia. This includes alerts on road closures, planned construction or repair work, as well as traffic diversions caused by rallies and major public events. These updates will be instantly reflected in the app, enabling users to choose alternative routes and avoid delays.

To ensure seamless information flow, police personnel across all districts have undergone training and have been added to dedicated WhatsApp groups created specifically for real-time data sharing with MapmyIndia. Officials said the process of updating live traffic inputs has already begun.

Gujarat Police and MapmyIndia are jointly working to strengthen the accuracy and frequency of traffic updates, with the goal of making daily travel safer, faster, and more convenient for road users across the state, they said.

Appealing to the public, Gujarat police urged citizens to download and use the Mappls app to stay informed about traffic conditions and contribute to smoother traffic management Statewide.
