Fierce Tempest in England.: on The Hindu’s Archives, a hundred years ago, November 28, 1924

LONDON, Nov. 27.

Tempest has caused terrific havoc throughout the country especially in Southern, Eastern and central England and partially interrupted telephonic communications. There has been a number of casualties. The foreshores of the south coast have been strewn with wreckage. Several lifeboats were called out.

The Channel boat “Dieppe” while entering Newhaven was lifted by the enormous sea and lodged on a sandbank. It was refloated after five hours. A Tug which was proceeding to assist her smashed against the seawall and foundered. The crew were rescued by a lifeboat.

Three steamers were lost off Portland, Whitby and Isle of Man respectively. The tempest has worked havoc in England. The wrecks include the two-thousand tonner steamer “Hartley” registered in Newcastle. It sank off Portland. The crew tool to a lifeboat which capsized and all except two were drowned. Light cruiser “Calliope” was especially sent out for the assistance of “Hartley”.
