Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar’s action-thriller Vidaamuyarchi, directed by Magizh Thirumeni, has earned Rs 22 crores on its opening day, February 6, according to tracking website Sacnilk.
The highly-anticipated film, produced by Lyca Productions, is reportedly a remake of the 1997 Hollywood film, Breakdown, starring Kurt Russell.
According to Sacnilk, the Tamil version of the film earned Rs 21.5 crores, while the Telugu states have contributed Rs 50 lakhs to the collections. The Tamil version had an overall occupancy of 61.23% on Thursday. Meanwhile, the morning shows saw 58.81% occupancy in theatres, followed by 60.27% for the afternoon shows, 54.79% for the evening shows, and 71.06% for the night shows.
Trichy and Pondicherry witnessed the most occupancy for the film, at 93.00% and 92.50% respectively. Chennai city came third, with 89.00%. Coimbatore saw 85.25% occupancy, while Vellore witnessed 80.75%.
The film had decent occupancy in theatres, with 58.81% in the morning, 60.27% in the afternoon and 54.79% in evening shows. Trichy and Pondicherry witnessed higher occupancy than Chennai at 92.00% and 91.67%, respectively, while Chennai had 88.33%.

With largely average to good reviews from the critics and fans, Vidaamuyarchi is expected to do well over the weekend. Also starring Trisha, the film is a road action thriller following a middle-aged man’s attempts to find his wife, who he believes was kidnapped by a truck driver and his wife.
Mostly shot in Azerbaijan, the film also stars Regina Cassandra, Arjun Sarja and Arav. Anirudh Ravichander composed the music for the movie while Nirav Shah and Om Prakash handled the cinematography.
