Quentin Tarantino revealed at the Sundance Film Festival that he is in “no hurry” to begin production on his final film, opting instead to focus on fatherhood and writing. Speaking with film critic Elvis Mitchell at the event, the Pulp Fiction director shared that his priority is spending time with his family.

Tarantino, who flew in from Israel for the discussion, explained that his decision stems from wanting his son, who turns five next month, to be old enough to have lasting memories of being on a movie set. “The idea of jumping on a voyage when they’re too young to understand it is not enticing to me,” he said. “I want to wait until my son is at least six so he’ll know what’s going on, and it will be a memory for the rest of his life.”

Although he is holding off on directing, Tarantino is not stepping away from creative projects. He is currently writing a play, which he hinted could influence his next film. “If it’s a smash hit, it might be my last movie,” he teased.

Tarantino also expressed frustration with modern filmmaking, criticising the short theatrical release windows and rapid streaming availability. “I didn’t get into all this for diminishing returns,” he said, calling theater “the final frontier” for creative expression.
