Mohanlal’s ‘L2: Empuraan’ becomes highest-grossing Malayalam movie of all-time

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s recent release L2: Empuraan on Saturday (April 5) became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time globally, dethroning 2024’s Manjummel Boys.

The film, which was released on March 27, is inching close to the Rs. 300-crore mark at the global box office. Mohanlal took to his official X handle to announce the news.

Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, Empuraan is the sequel to his 2019 film Lucifer. The second instalment of the action franchise continued to tell the story of Stephen Nedumpally aka Khureshi-Ab’raam.

This comes despite the film being riddled with controversies for its references to the 2002 Gujarat pogrom. Since its release, the film has been facing severe backlash from supporters of the right-wing, leading to the makers making 24 ‘voluntary cuts’ totalling 2.08 minutes. The re-edited version, certified by the regional officer of the Central Board of Film Certification, is likely to appear in theatres by April 2.

Written by Murali Gopy, the film also features Prithviraj, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Arjun Das, Fazil, and Shine Tom Chacko.

L2: Empuraan is produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Gokulam Gopalan, and Subaskaran under the banners of Aashirvad Cinemas, Sree Gokulam Movies, and Lyca Productions.
