Austin Butler cast as Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘American Psycho’

Austin Butler and Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in a still from ‘American Psycho’

Austin Butler is stepping into the world of American Psycho, taking on the iconic role of Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel. Lionsgate is backing the project, which will feature a script by Scott Z. Burns (The Laundromat).

Unlike the 2000 film starring Christian Bale, Guadagnino’s interpretation will not be a remake but a fresh take on Ellis’ story. Known for his distinctive storytelling in Call Me by Your Name, Bones and All and most recently Challengers and the upcoming Queer, Guadagnino is expected to bring a unique perspective to the tale of a 1980s Wall Street yuppie who hides his murderous tendencies behind a façade of affluence and charm. Early indications suggest the film may emphasize eroticism alongside its satirical and psychological elements.

Butler’s casting puts to rest rumors that Jacob Elordi, fresh off Priscilla, was being considered for the role. Interestingly, both Butler and Elordi have portrayed Elvis Presley in critically acclaimed films by Baz Luhrmann and Sofia Coppola, respectively.

Guadagnino’s track record and recent Golden Globe recognition for Queer and Challengers have raised expectations for American Psycho. Daniel Craig (Queer) and Zendaya (Challengers) have earned nods for their performances.
