Engineers to play key role in advancing defence technology, says expert

Senior Scientist (Scientist-H) from the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Kochi, Duvvuri Seshagiri, highlighted the vital role of engineers in the defence sector and urged students to focus on research and innovation.

Delivering a lecture on “Air Detection Radar – Indian Perspective” at Sheshadri Rao Gudlavalleru Engineering College (SRGEC) on Friday, Dr. Seshagiri advised students to cultivate an interest in innovation, research, and practical knowledge, noting that the next generation of engineers has a key role to play in advancing defence technology.

Explaining the technical aspects and development of Air Intercept Radar, he underscored its significance for the Indian Air Force. Through an engaging PowerPoint presentation, he elaborated on fundamental concepts of radar technology, including signal processing, target tracking, and identification, in an easily understandable manner.

He emphasised that radar is a crucial tool in modern warfare and stressed the importance of achieving self-reliance in radar technology through indigenous research and development. In the interactive session that followed, he addressed students’ questions, providing relevant technical examples to clarify their doubts.

College Principal Burra Karuna Kumar, Director P. Siddhaya, and Academic Advisor P. Ravindra Babu felicitated Dr. Seshagiri.

Earlier, a discussion between Dr. Seshagiri and college representatives focused on creating collaborative project opportunities with defence research institutions such as DRDO, arranging internships and training programmes to provide students with hands-on experience in defence laboratories, strengthening college-level laboratories for radar signal processing and electronics, and exploring career opportunities, research scholarships, and higher education prospects abroad in the field of defence research.
