An elderly woman was stabbed by her neighbour multiple times in front of her house at New Telecom Nagar area falling under the Mayiladuthurai police station limits on Thursday. The woman’s husband, who came to her rescue, also suffered injuries.
The Mayiladuthurai police arrested R. Prem, 22, and booked an attempt to murder case against him. The injured woman Nirmala, 61, and her husband R. Sethumadhavan, 65, are undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Thanjavur.
A police press release said Prem’s house was in front of the residence of the elderly couple. The two families had not been speaking to each other because of minor problems between them. The woman went out of her house to draw kolam around 6.30 a.m. when Prem entered into an argument with Ms. Nirmala.
The argument soon turned worse as Prem brandished a knife and stabbed Ms. Nirmala indiscriminately. Mr. Sethumadhavan, who came to his wife’s rescue, suffered injuries.
The couple were treated at the Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital and were subsequently shifted to a private hospital in Thanjavur. The Mayiladuthurai police have taken up investigation into the crime, the release added.
