‘Jumanji’ actor Dwayne Johnson has been through a lot of things since his childhood. In a recent interview, the actor talked about what it was like for him to grow up in a dysfunctional family dynamic and how it felt to get through everything.
Dwayne Johnson opens up about the hardships he faced as a child
While talking about his life in an interview with Variety, the actor revealed that his parents had a dysfunctional relationship, which definitely had an effect on him. He added that they “had an explosive and volcanic relationship. My dad was a pro wrestler at a time when it was the Wild West. There weren’t million-dollar contracts. It was paycheck to paycheck and just trying to survive. And my dad struggled with his addictions and focused on his career and himself, while my mom was at home, raising me.”Johnson has moved around a lot ever since he was a child. From North Carolina to Connecticut, his family was always shifting around.

The ‘Black Adam’ star also added about how his mother wanted her needs to be met and had a lot of dreams that she had to give up on. While raising him and taking care of his father, his mother gave up on everything else in her life. “All she wanted was to be seen, and she was never seen. And I grew up watching that kind of decline in a relationship when a man battles his own demons. I watched their fights. I heard their fights, which is even worse,” he added.
On the work front
Johnson’s latest film, ‘The Smashing Machine’, garnered critical acclaim and was first premiered at the 82nd Venice Film Festival on September 1 last year. The film follows the real-life story of former wrestler and mixed martial artist Mark Kerr. It stars Emily Blunt as his romantic interest in the film, and follows along his journey through the world of MMA and his issues with drug addiction amongst other things.
