According to research published by the University of Houston, under the title, “Discovery Unlocks Potential of ‘Special’ Muscle“. Sitting too much has long been recognised as the root cause of major health factors, but this research from Marc Hamilton, a professor of human and health performance at the University of Houston, has offered a surprising solution: the soleus pushup. Marc and his team gathered data on people by combining muscle biopsies, blood tests, and metabolic monitoring during the seated pushup. They measured oxygen consumption, blood glucose, insulin levels, and fat metabolism. He made his participants wear wearable sensors that tracked activity in real time, showing that the soleus efficiently burns sugar and fat, improving metabolic health even while sitting.
The research shows that the SPU can reduce blood sugar spikes after meals by 52%, decrease insulin requirements by 60% and double fat metabolism during fasting. Unlike any other muscle in the body, that relies on the stored carbs of the body, the soleus efficiently burns blood sugar and fat for hours without fatigue.
Marc Hamilton labels this study as “the most important study” from his lab, highlighting the soleus pushup as a promising tool to transform how we approach blood sugar, right form our chair.
