Denmark’s national postal service PostNord stopped the delivery of postal letters in the country from Tuesday (December 30, 2025), according to the agency.

This rare decision makes Denmark probably the first country in the world to stop postal service. The volume of letters has decreased by over 90% since the year 2000 in the country, PostNord said in a statement published in March 2025.

The agency is also planning to upgrade itself by improving its parcel services, considering a huge hike in online shopping in the country.

According to the statement, the last day to send basic posts such as letters, business letters, direct mail, and magazine mail was on December 18. The agency also stopped receiving quick mails by December 29, 2025.

International postal delivery has also been stopped from December 31.

“We’ve made sure that all postal labels purchased in 2024 — or to be purchased in 2025 — can be refunded for a limited time in 2026 if you don’t use them in 2025,” the agency said.

Roughly 1,500 mailboxes throughout Denmark were taken down, and an estimated 1,500 of PostNord’s 4,600 employees were decided to be laid off.

“We have been the Danes’ postal service for 400 years and therefore it is a difficult decision to put a bow on that part of our story,” PostNord Denmark chief executive Kim Pedersen said in a news release. “The Danes have become more and more digital which means that there are very few letters left for us to handle today, and the downturn continues so clearly that the market for letters is no longer profitable.”

The agency, that delivers post in Sweden as well, said Sweden’s letter delivery will not be affected.
