A day after the United States military forcibly took away President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores from Venezuela’s capital Caracas, India has expressed its concern for the “well-being of the people of Venezuela” and called for dialogue to ensure peace and stability in the region.

The Ministry of External Affairs had earlier issued a travel advisory for Indian citizens calling upon them to stay safe as resource-rich Venezuela deals with the current political crisis after the forcible extraction of President Maduro.

“Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation. India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela. We call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region,” said the Ministry of External Affairs in a statement.

The MEA further informed that the Embassy of India in capital Caracas, which witnessed U.S. military action on Saturday (January 3, 2025) ahead of the extraction of President Maduro, “is in contact with members of the Indian community and will continue to provide all possible assistance”.

Earlier the MEA had advised Indian citizens in Venezuela to “exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements and remain in contact with Embassy of India in Caracas through their email ID: cons.caracas@mea.gov.in. or the emergency phone number +58-412-9584288 (also for WhatsApp calls).”

Though India has cut down oil imports from Venezuela, the Latin American country has been a steady energy partner for India and also a major partner in India’s quest for a just world system. Venezuela shares India’s position on reform of the international institutions and has been supporting India’s bid for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council for almost a decade.
