Complaint against actor Ranveer Singh for ‘hurting religious sentiments’ of Tulu community

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh greets Kannada actor Rishab Shetty during the closing ceremony of the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), in Panaji, Goa, on November 28, 2025.

A Bengaluru-based advocate has filed a complaint at the High Grounds Police Station accusing Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh of insulting the traditional Tulu spirit-worship practice depicted in the movie Kantara.

Advocate Prashanth Methal, a practitioner in the High Court of Karnataka, submitted a written complaint alleging that the actor mocked the sacred daiva tradition during his stage act at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa on November 28.

According to the complaint, the actor allegedly performed a caricature of the Panjurli/Guliga Daiva, said to be revered divine spirit in the coastal Karnataka region. The advocate claims the performance was ‘crude, derogatory, and comical’, causing ‘deep hurt’ to Hindu religious sentiments, especially among the Tulu-speaking community.

The complaint further states that Ranveer Singh referred to the daiva as a ‘ghost’, which the complainant claimed is blasphemous, and shows ‘deliberate disrespect’ to Hindu beliefs. The complaint mentions that the video has gone viral, causing ‘anger and resentment’ among devotees.

He demanded that the police initiate legal action relating to outraging religious feelings, promoting enmity between communities, and intentional insult.

The advocate has urged the police to register an FIR and initiate legal action to ensure that such acts are not repeated.

The complaint has been acknowledged by the SHO of High Grounds Police Station.
