Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is set to inaugurate the first phase of the Kanampuzha revival project on December 26, marking the launch of the State’s first-ever river revitalisation initiative. The event will feature a series of activities, as outlined in a recent meeting chaired by Minister for Archaeology, Museum, and Registration, Ramachandran Kadannappally.
The meeting, held at the Haritha Keralam Mission office, Kannur, reviewed the preparations for the inauguration, with Kanampuzha Revival Project Committee Convener N. Chandran presenting the draft plan. Haritha Keralam State assistant coordinator T.P. Sudhakaran also shared a detailed report. The meeting stressed the importance of making the inauguration a public event, reflecting the collective efforts of the committee, Haritha Keralam Mission, Irrigation department, and other key agencies.
“The Kanampuzha river is undergoing significant transformation. Efforts to restore the river are showing promising results,” said Mr. Sudhakaran
On December 15, a public cleaning campaign will be held, followed by a seminar on December 24 at Chovva Bank Hall. The seminar will highlight the progress of the project, accompanied by a photo exhibition celebrating the river.
Mr. Sudhakaran said the section between Chovva Bridge and Thilannoor Shishu Mandiram Road has been fully renovated, including the removal of silt and waste from the river. A granite side wall has been constructed, and water channels have been built to improve irrigation for the surrounding paddy fields. To further enhance the area for tourism, footpaths were added along both sides of the river, coir geotextiles were laid, and solar-powered street lights were installed, he added.
The revitalisation has not only improved irrigation but has also restored the natural beauty of Kanampuzha. National recognition for the project has already been earned, with the Association of Municipalities and Development Authorities highlighting Kanampuzha as a model for urban river restoration.
