Camera maker OM System re-enters India, eyes strong growth


OM System, global major in imaging technology (previously known as Olympus), offering products such as cameras, lens and binoculars, has re-entered the Indian market with the introduction of two new products targeted at outdoor photographers. 

These include the OM-5 Mark II and the M. Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm F2.8 IS PRO lens. 

With this Japanese multinational is seeing strong growth in India driven by wildlife, travel and content creation photography, a top executive said. 

In the next 12 to 18 months the company would expand its product range and distribution in India which is heading to growth hub within APAC, the executive said.

“By 2026, we aim to establish Om System as the leading brand for outdoor creators in India. The mirrorless segment is growing rapidly, and we see strong growth potential driven by wildlife, travel, and content creation communities,” said Vivek Handoo, Head of APAC & Managing Director India, OM System in an interview. 

“Over the next 12–18 months, our milestones include expanding the product portfolio, growing the dealer and partner ecosystem, and investing in direct community engagement through initiatives like the APAC photography competition,” he said. 

“These efforts will ensure that Om System becomes not just a product choice but a trusted companion for creators in India. By aligning our roadmap with local needs, we aim to cement India’s role as a strategic growth hub within APAC,” he added.

Answering a question on Make in India he said, “While we are actively studying local manufacturing trends and remain open to the possibility of Make in India in the long term, our immediate focus and priority is to bring the very best of our global innovation to Indian creators and to build a strong, sustainable market ecosystem.”

Commenting on the long-term vision of the company he said, “India is a strategic priority for us within the Asia Pacific region. The country has a vibrant mix of photography communities, from wildlife and birding enthusiasts to travel and urban storytellers, making it uniquely suited to our outdoor vision.”

“Our long-term vision is to empower Indian photographers with world-class technology, nurture creativity through meaningful engagement, and build a robust dealer and partner ecosystem that ensures reliability and access,” he added. 

Highlighting the importance the new launches he said, “These launches directly reflect the needs of Indian creators who often work in extreme and unpredictable environments.”.

In India, the company is strengthening its dealer ecosystem by expanding distribution both offline and online, ensuring that customers across the country have access to our latest products, he stated.

On the transition Shigemi Sugimoto, CEO, OM Digital Solutions Corporation said

“Globally, the company is well established and has been performing strongly, proving that the transition was a step toward agility and innovation rather than disruption.” 

“By sharpening our focus on outdoor creators, we have developed compact, lightweight, and highly reliable imaging systems that meet real-world demands,” he added.
