‘Rate businesses based on environmental impact’

Indian climate leaders [top executives of entities associated with mitigating carbon emission, policy makers] have highlighted the need for rating businesses based on their environmental impact to ensure tangible result on the ground.

To augment green finance, they also emphasised on the importance of credit enhancements for low-rated infrastructure Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) to access bond markets and the transformative role battery-as-a-service (BaaS) can play in promoting electric mobility, while speaking recently at the AFAI (Association of Financial Advisors of India) National Summit & Indian Climate Leader Awards 2025 function.

Stating that a significant portion of infrastructure financing (debt) is currently managed by a small number of non-bank financial companies, they also emphasised that government led funding to mitigate the environment impact would be unsustainable in the long run, according to a statement issued here.

“To meet the target of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity for electricity generation and storage by 2030, a total investment of about ₹20 lakh crore will be required,” said Vivek Kumar Dewangan, CMD, REC Ltd. while speaking at the AFAI National Summit & Indian Climate Leader Awards 2025 event, the organisers said.

“REC is targeting a market share of about ₹3 lakh crore by 2030. Our renewable energy portfolio, which is currently about 10% of our AUM, will increase to about 30% by 2030,” he said.

Speaking at the AFAI National Summit, Virender Pankaj, CEO, Aseem Infrastructure Finance Ltd. said India was striving to mitigate risks associated with infrastructure financing.

“Moving forward, there is a need to address currency risks and enhance awareness about implementation of risk reduction measures,” he said.

“This increased awareness is crucial for boosting participation from both domestic and foreign investors,” he added.
