Ratan Tata is a north star for entrepreneurs, says Sangita Reddy

Ratan Tata was, and continues to be, a north star for entrepreneurs in India. His passing on October 9 due to prolonged illness is not only a significant loss for India but also for the entire world, as noted by Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director of Apollo Hospitals, in an exclusive conversation with Republic Business .

With a heavy heart, Reddy recalled her last meeting with Ratan Tata in Hyderabad a few months ago. “I had the privilege of meeting him over a cup of tea. I was struck by his outreach, humility, and ability to connect,” she shared. Tata inquired about her father’s well-being and encouraged her and her sisters to carry forward their father’s legacy—an unforgettable message that resonates deeply with Reddy.

As the head of one of India’s largest healthcare chains, Reddy remembers Ratan Tata for conducting business with the highest ethical standards. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, he ensured that employees of the Tata Group continued to receive their salaries, even when the hospitality sector was severely affected. His response after the 26/11 terror attack was similar. That is what Ratan Tata stands for conducting business with humility, ethics, and a commitment to humanitarianism.”

As India and the world mourn the loss of Ratan Tata, Reddy emphasises, “It’s largely due to him that the Tata Group reached new heights.” She highlights that what the Tata Group produced is one aspect, but what they represents is something far greater. “He is the jewel of India and the world—more than a memory, he is an enduring inspiration,” Reddy stated.
