The Thoothukudi police on Sunday made the busy Bala Vinayagar Temple Road a one-way to ease traffic congestion. Many road users have welcomed the move. The measure is, however, experimental.
The city, which has two main thoroughfares β GC Road and VE Road. From Palayamkottai to Old Port, the vehicles used the two major roads and among others. There was traffic congestion on many stretches on these two roads during peak hours.
After examining the possibilities, the police proposed to ban entry of vehicles from Anna statue intersection to Bala Vinayagar Temple Road. Hence, the vehicles would be allowed from west side of Cruz Fernandez statue junction. Vehicles from Palayamkottai Road intending to go to Bala Vinayagar Temple Road hvae to reach the Cruz Fernandez Statue and then enter the road.
The share autorickshaws are allowed to take the VE Salai-Sugam Hotel Junction and reach Gin Factory Road, the police said and added that they have put up huge display boards explaining the new traffic arrangement.
A senior officer said that the police would monitor the situation for about a week or two and then take a final decision. The police have urged the members of the public to give their suggestions on the new rule.
