A growing health-conscious consumer base and increased exposure to global food trends is driving interest among Indians in international food and fruits, said John Tyas, CEO, Avocados Australia, an entity that promotes Australian avocados in key global markets.
With this trend fast catching up, Australia is making a strong bid to penetrate into the premium fruit segment with Australian avocados. “India is an exciting and high-potential market for Australian avocados. Continued efforts in education, retail partnerships, and supply chain enhancements will be key to sustained growth,” Mr. Tyas told The Hindu.
“We are looking forward to collaborating with industry partners to drive long-term success in India,” he added. In its first full year of access to this market, Australia exported 567 tonnes and more than volume, the entity is more keen in long term growth, he highlighted.
“The Indian avocado market is very much in its infancy. It will take time to grow the market, and we need to be patient,” the CEO said.
Mr. Tyas said Avocados Australia would particularly be targeting premium market segments with its premium fruit quality and service.
“As the overall market grows over time, the size of the premium market will also grow and expand the opportunity for Australian avocados,” he said. ”We plan to focus our efforts over the next few years on trade activations rather than consumer promotions. There is a lot of foundation work that needs to be done in India to develop the category, but we are committed for the long term,” he added.
With the Indian market flooded with Tanzanian avocados, Australia is focusing on its value proposition — consistent quality, superior taste, and year round availability.
“Our aim is to integrate avocados into Indian eating habits beyond just Western-style consumption,” Mr. Tyas added.
“We want to expand supply chain partnerships to ensure wider availability and optimal quality,” he said. “We are also exploring collaborations with foodservice players to drive avocado adoption in mainstream menus,” Mr. Tyas said.
Stating that ensuring the freshness of avocados was crucial, especially when exporting to distant markets like India, he said since avocados are highly perishable, the fruits require careful handling throughout the supply chain.
