Are you taking magnesium pills to sleep? Cardiologist reveals which type usually works best

Magnesium has many benefits, but the intake of this supplement is not without risks, especially when taken in excess or by individuals with certain health conditions.

Gastrointestinal upset-diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramping-is the most common side effect, mainly with forms that are poorly absorbed, such as oxide and sulfate.

Higher dosages of magnesium include severe hypotension, muscle weakness, confusion, and irregular heartbeat; toxicity is possible in extreme cases. Individuals suffering from kidney-related disorders or with less than efficient renal function have a unique vulnerability to being at risk because their system cannot efficiently clear the excess of magnesium.

Interactions with medications, including diuretics, antibiotics, and heart drugs, may either increase side effects or disturb efficacy. It’s a very good idea to check with your doctor before supplementing.
