Protests are mounting over the exclusion of Alappuzha district from the Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY). Kodikunnil Suresh, MP, said the decision was an injustice to the farmers.
In a statement issued here, the Mavelikara MP said the exclusion of Alappuzha, which plays a key role in the agricultural economy, from the list of 100 districts recently announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was evidence of the Union government’s anti-farmer approach. “For farmers in the Kuttanad–Onattukara regions, who repeatedly face floods and crop destruction due to climate change, this scheme was a ray of hope. However, the Central government’s decision to exclude Alappuzha, prioritising political considerations, directly disappoints the farmers,” Mr. Suresh said.
He said he had been constantly urging the NITI Aayog and other senior Central government officials to include the district in the scheme. “The lives of Kuttanad farmers, who cultivate their fields despite floods, saltwater intrusion, rising cultivation costs, and declining production, could have been transformed through this scheme. However, the BJP government ignored them for political reasons,” the MP criticised.
