Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has urged the Centre to suspend the implementation of the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G Ram G) since it would defeat the very intent of the original MGNREGA, a demand-driven, right-based guarantee scheme.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister said, “The repeal of MGNREGA weakens the right to work, centralises decisions, and shifts an unfair burden onto States”.
The new Act guarantees 125 days of work per year against 100 days in the MGNREGA. Under the new Act, the Central and the State governments would share the expenditure in the ratio of 60:40 against the 90:10 in the previous law.
“The new Act involves serious constitutional, financial and governance concerns,” Mr. Siddaramaiah said.
