A dip in night temperature in Yadgir district of Karnataka has forced people to stay indoors in warm conditions even after sunrise.

People experienced extreme adverse weather conditions from August to the middle of November. August and September saw torrential rainfall and floods. Most of the days in October were sunny. Light showers were reported in the first week of November, and now, the district is experiencing chilled weather conditions at night.

According to data between November 9 and 13, the day temperature averaged 29 to 32 degree Celsius and the night temperature averaged 17 to 18 degree Celsius.

The dip in temperature at night and early morning hours has badly hit the activities of milk and vegetable vendors. and newspaper hawkers.

“We normally see a hot wave or high temperatures in Yadgir, and have adjusted to it during summer. But the chilled weather condition at the beginning of winter season forces us to stay indoors and come out much after sunrise,” said Basavalingappa, who stepped out to buy milk after covering his ears and nose with a muffler.

The chilled weather conditions during the winter season may impact the health conditions of toddlers and elderly persons. People may suffer from a cold, cough, fever and body ache.

Mahesh Biradar, District Health Officer, told The Hindu, “Persons suffering from asthma or heart-related diseases, and patients with diabetes and high blood pressure should take additional care and concern by avoiding going out during adverse weather conditions, which are harmful to their health. People should consume warm water as much as possible and hot food, and avoid cold food and drinks.”

He advises people to avoid early morning and late evening walks, and rush to the nearest health care centre in case of any ill-health symptoms due to cold weather conditions.

On the other hand, the chilled weather condition will help to bring a good fortune to farmers, as the jowar and Bengal gram crops are expected to grow elegantly.

“Late evening and early morning fog in the winter season, especially in the pre-grain formation stage, will lead to a better yield of jowar and Bengal gram crops,” said Venkatesh, a farmer.

According to sources in the Agriculture Department, the Bengal gram and jowar harvested at the end of February depend on their sowing.
