Issue of transparency
It is inexplicable as to why any data relating to the conduct of elections should be kept away from the reach of voters/citizens, after the declaration of results (Editorial, March 21). In our secret ballot system of voting (now voting on EVMs), one can never know who voted for whom in an election, even if the entire data on elections is disclosed by the Election Commission of India. If the collation and compilation of data is systematic and without any errors, no controversy can arise from the scrutiny of data. It is the responsibility of the ECI to ensure that the voter turnout data reported from election booths is accurate and the final data released at the end matches with the data declared on polling day. In this era of instant communications and technology, data transmission from booth level to the State capital and from there to the ECI should not be difficult.

Playing with fire
Today it is Aurangzeb in Nagpur. Tomorrow it may be Mysuru and Srirangapatnam in Karnataka. A spark may ignite a bigger fire. Petty political leaders are stoking communal fires and this is not good for India. Rulers must think again before they try to reopen history books.
