Man held on charge of possessing ganja in Kochi


The Nedumbassery Police and a special investigation team of the Ernakulam Rural Police, formed to curb drug peddling, arrested a taxi driver on Sunday (March 16, 2024) and seized four kg of suspected ganja from his possession.

A native of Alummoodu in Kollam, Rasheed, 28, was arrested at Nayathode with the suspected narcotic drug, which he had reportedly sourced from Odisha, based on a tip-off received by District Police Chief (Ernakulam Rural) Vaibhav Saxena. The suspected ganja was found concealed in his bag in two packets.

He reportedly used to sell the drug in smaller packets at the rate of ₹30,000 per kg. The arrest was made by a team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police T. R. Rajesh.

27 cases registered

Meanwhile, teams led by Deputy Commissioners Aswathy Jiji and Juvvanapudi Mahesh conducted combing operations at various locations in the city and registered 27 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. As part of this, the Thoppumpady police arrested Arunkumar T.K., 33, of Rameshwaram, West Kochi, on the charge of possessing 13 gm of alleged MDMA. The arrest was based on a tip-off received about his presence near Moolamkuzhi.

A police team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Narcotics Cell) Abdul Salam reportedly seized 10.45 gm of alleged MDMA from Mohammed Sanub, 33, a native of Wayanad who was residing at Manapattiparambu, Kaloor. They also registered 72 cases for driving under the influence of alcohol.
