Vanuatu PM orders cancellation of Lalit Modi’s passport

Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat directs the Citizenship Commission to cancel the Vanuatu passport issued to Lalit Modi in a statement issue on Monday (March 10, 2025)

“I have instructed the Citizenship Commission to immediately begin proceedings to cancel Mr. Modi’s Vanuatu passport”, read a statement issued by PM of Vanuatu.

He said that he was made aware in the past 24 hours that Interpol twice rejected Indian authorities request to issue an alert notice on Lalit Modi due to lack of judicial evidence.

Indian Premier League (IPL) founder Lalit Modi applied with the Indian High Commission in London to surrender his Indian passport, according to External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

Responding to developments in the thorny case between the two countries, the MEA spokesperson said that India is aware that Mr. Modi, who is wanted for tax evasion and embezzlement cases in India, has acquired the citizenship of Vanuatu.

Mr. Modi continues to live in London more than a decade after India has demanded his extradition. Mr. Jaiswal said that Mr. Modi has now made an application to surrender his Indian passport which will be examined.
