The U.S. and Ukraine

It looks as if it is a case of playing musical chairs for Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy when it comes to dealing with the United States (Page 1, March 5). Mr. Zelenskyy is now struggling for survival with the shadow of economic woes over him. This is also a case of fast-developing diplomacy. However, the people of Ukraine deserve peace.

The Ukrainian President’s ardent plea to the American President, that he wants to ‘make things right’ and is willing to work under Mr. Trump’s ‘strong leadership’ to secure a lasting peace, should be viewed in the proper perspective by Mr. Trump. One waits to see to what extent the President of the most powerful country will accede to the request of a President of a comparatively small country which is suffering immense hardships.

Let hard feelings give way to smooth ties in order to enable Ukrainians to have peace after much agony.

Mr. Zelenskyy’s request is a direct victory for President Trump. Mr. Trump was right: why should American taxpayer’s money be wasted in a mindless war? Mr. Trump should also have a look at the workings of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which is the root cause for most of the wars across the globe. I wonder why Europe’s leaders are hell bent on continuing the war. After all, Europe was the main agent behind two world wars, which killed millions.

Politicians, the population

A growing population was seen as an impediment to economic progress in the 1970s. Government policies favoured citizens with sops for adopting population control measures. But ever since the issue of delimitation has come up, many in the political class are advising people to have more children. The Chief Ministers of certain States are urging citizens to have more children so as to have more electoral representatives. Is it wise to be preferring ‘representation’ over economic progress?

At Dubai

Team India did well to bury the ghosts of the 2023 World Cup loss at Ahmedabad and record a memorable victory at Dubai. The charge that the Men in Blue have the same venue advantage sounds hollow since all the teams playing are used to Dubai.
