Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are officially attached to produce an upcoming crime film set in Hawaii, originating from an idea by Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, according to Deadline. The project, currently being shopped to studios and streamers, is already drawing comparisons to The Departed and Goodfellas, though no distribution deal is in place yet.

The untitled crime drama will be penned by journalist and author Nick Bilton, known for directing the 2021 HBO documentary Fake Famous. Johnson and Blunt, who previously starred together in Jungle Cruise, reportedly developed the concept before bringing it to Scorsese and DiCaprio. Once the Hollywood heavyweights expressed interest, Bilton was approached to write the script.

The film’s impressive roster of producers includes Scorsese, DiCaprio, Johnson, Blunt, Bilton, Dany Garcia, Lisa Frechette, and Rick Yorn. While details about the plot remain under wraps, industry insiders suggest that the film will witness the tension of Scorsese’s past crime classics with a fresh, tropical setting.

This marks another major collaboration between Johnson and Blunt, who are already working together on The Smashing Machine, an A24 drama directed by Benny Safdie that is being hailed as one of Johnson’s most ambitious dramatic roles. Meanwhile, Scorsese and DiCaprio continue their long-standing partnership, having delivered iconic films like Gangs of New York, The Aviator, Shutter Island, and Killers of the Flower Moon.
