The Selvapuram police in Coimbatore on Wednesday (February 12, 2025) arrested a 34-year-old man on the charge of carrying two Molotov cocktails (incendiary bombs), which he allegedly planned to hurl at the office of a local BJP functionary in the city over a personal dispute.

M. Nasar, 34, a resident of Sundarapuram in the city, was arrested during a vehicle check early Wednesday morning. According to the police, Nasar sped away on his two-wheeler when police constables, Sanjay Gandhi and Prasanth, were checking vehicles at Telungupalayam junction at 12.30 a.m. The policemen, after a chase, managed to intercept him, and found that the suspect was carrying two Molotov cocktails.

During interrogation, Nasar told the police he had known Manikandan of Telungupalayam, the president of BJP’s spiritual wing in Coimbatore (south), for nearly two years, and that he had recently demanded that Mr. Manikandan give him ₹5,000, which the latter had refused.

The police said Nasar confessed that he consumed liquor with three others at Karumbukadai late on Tuesday and later purchased a litre of petrol from a fuel station to make two Molotov cocktails. Nasar was stopped by the policemen when he was heading to Mr. Manikandan’s office at Telungupalayam junction, and he was allegedly planning to hurl the crude explosives at the building, the police said.

According to the police, Nasar faced cases against him for using Molotov cocktail in the city in the past.
