Plans afoot to develop Badanavalu on the lines of Sabarmati ashram

Commissioner of the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Arundhati Chandrashekar visited the historical century-old khadi spinning centre at Badanavalu near Nanjangud in connection with the plans to develop the place into a tourist destination.

The Khadi gramodyog centre has a significant past as Mahatma Gandhi visited Badanavalu. A sum of ₹45 crore has been set aside in the Budget for developing the place on the lines of Sabarmati ashram in Gujarat. In view of this, the commissioner visited Badanaval to discuss the plans for preparing a blue print for the project.

The Commissioner was accompanied by Mysuru ZP CEO K.M. Gayathri. Ms. Arundhathi collected details from KRIDL executive engineer Tippa Reddy on the action plan and how the funds set aside can be utilised for developing the place on the lines of Sabarmati ashram and attract visitors to the historical site.

The Commissioner visited the spinning centre and spoke to the weavers, who sought a salary hike. While assuring to discuss the salary issue with the concerned, the Commissioner spoke on the government’s plans for rejuvenating the century-old Khadi centre and encouraging cottage industries in the rural areas.

In the past, there had been demands for developing the historical centre on the lines of Sabarmati ashram in Gujarat. There was a demand from the people’s representatives for developing the “Mahatma Gandhi-inspired” Khadi Centre into a yoga and meditation centre.
