Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan emphasised the importance of making cleanliness a part of people’s lives while participating in the “Swachh Andhra – Swachh Divas” program at Namburu village, Guntur district, on Saturday (January 18). The event, held under the Panchayat Raj Department’s initiative, was also attended by Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar, Ponnur MLA Dhulipalla Narendra, and other officials.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Pawan Kalyan highlighted that cleanliness was a collective responsibility and not just limited to sanitation workers or CLAP (Clean Andhra Pradesh) volunteers. “Cleanliness is a reflection of our thoughts and it must become a part of our daily lives. A garbage-free society begins at home,” he remarked.
During the program, the Deputy CM inspected waste management systems, interacted with sanitation staff, and planted saplings to promote green initiatives, and in an effort to promote broader and active parrticipation in the cleanliness drive, he drove a garbage tractor.
Mr. Pawan Kalyan outlined plans for sustainable waste management, including separating waste at its source and converting waste into wealth through recycling and composting. He urged local bodies to adopt systematic approaches, such as vermicomposting and generating energy from waste, to reduce garbage.
The program aims to organise “Swachh Andhra – Swachh Divas” on the third Saturday of every month as per the directives of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu. Mr. Pawan Kalyan called on public representatives and officials to take ownership of the initiative and involve citizens actively.
He also addressed concerns about bio-waste management, particularly from hospitals, and emphasised the need for pollution control and health safety measures. Promising improved wages for CLAP workers, he assured that the issue would be brought to the Cabinet’s attention.
Acknowledging the contributions of sanitation staff, Mr. Pawan Kalyan honoured 35 workers for their exemplary service during recent Vijayawada floods, calling their efforts invaluable.
Senior officials, including Panchayat Raj Principal Secretary Shashibhushan Kumar, Panchayat Raj Director Krishna Teja Mylavarapu, and Guntur District Collector S. Nagalakshmi, were present.
