To commemorate the 97th year of destruction of Manusmriti by B.R. Ambedkar at a women’s conference in 1927, members of the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti staged a demonstration at Jagat Circle here on Wednesday and burnt copies of the religious text to protest against discrimination in the name of caste and gender.

Members of the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti led by its State convener Arjun Bhadre took out a mock funeral procession of Manusmriti and burnt the text at Jagat Circle.

Mr. Bhadre said that Manusmriti justifies exploitative social order by upholding Varnashrama. This burning of Manusmriti will symbolise the burning of history of exploitation. Dr. Ambedkar was sure that as long as the right-wing Brahminical ideology prevails, India can never progress, he recalled.

Dr. Ambedkar burnt Manusmriti in public on December 25, 1927 during the Mahad Satyagraha, Mr. Bhadre added.

“We have been fighting caste-based discrimination for centuries. Dr. Ambedkar was the first to raise a voice against such practices openly 100 years ago and today, we need to continuously fight the Sangh Parivar ideologically and politically through a collective action before it becomes dangerous to the nation,” Mr. Bhadre said and strongly condemned fascist forces for their attempt to replace the Constitution.
