The death toll in the Alappuzha road accident rose to six with another medical student succumbing to his injuries on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Albin George from Edathua in Kuttanad, Alappuzha. Albin, who suffered critical injuries, was shifted from the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Alappuzha, to a private hospital in Ernakulam on Wednesday.
The accident occurred on Monday night when a car carrying 11 first-year MBBS students from Government Medical College, Alappuzha, collided with a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus at Kalarcode. Five students were killed on the spot.
Four students who sustained serious injuries in the accident remain under medical care at the MCH. The MCH authorities on Thursday said that Anand Manu, Muhasin, Gowri Sankar and Krishadev continue to receive treatment and none of them require ventilator support. Shane, a student from Thiruvananthapuram, escaped with minor injuries. The group was heading to watch a movie in Alappuzha in the rented car.
Meanwhile, the Alappuzha South police have registered a case against Gowri Sankar who drove the car under Section 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The police submitted a report regarding the accident to a local court in Alappuzha.
According to the Motor Vehicles department, the students rented the car from an unauthorised rent-a-car facility. Authorities have identified its owner and have initiated action against him.
