MP Chamala raises Musi rejuvenation project in Lok Sabha, seeks Central support

Congress MP from Bhongir, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, urged the Union government to extend financial and technical assistance for Telangana’s ambitious Musi River Rejuvenation Project.

Raising the matter under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Mr. Reddy emphasised the environmental, social, and economic importance of the project, while highlighting the severe pollution affecting the river and its surrounding areas.

“The Musi, once a lifeline for Hyderabad and its surrounding regions, has been heavily polluted due to untreated sewage, industrial effluents, and encroachments,” he said, adding that around 40,000 acres of farmland in Nalgonda district depends on the river for irrigation.

He outlined the proposed project’s objectives, including the establishment of sewage treatment plants (STPs) to ensure 100% treatment of effluents, the development of an East-West Corridor integrating multi-modal transport systems, and the transformation of the riverfront into a hub for recreation, tourism, and economic activities.

Calling for Central support, Mr. Reddy stated, “Given the scale and scope, the project requires significant financial and technical backing. I urge the Union government to collaborate with the Telangana government by providing assistance through development schemes and extending technical expertise to realise this vision.”
