Gita Gopinath, the First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) honoured her Indian roots as she attended the Diwali celebrations hosted at the White House by US President Joe Biden on Monday. She arrived at the event decked up in a handloom saree. She chose a solid peach saree with a golden border for the festivity.
Gita Gopinath teamed the youthful peach saree with a simple matching blouse. Rather than going overboard on jewellery, she went for an open choker necklace and matching earrings. The floral design of the statement necklace added a modern flair to the traditional look. The golden bangles perfectly complemented the outfit. Her humble yet sophisticated saree look was on point with her side-parted open hair, kohled eyes, fresh dewy makeup, and nude lips. She chose to skip the bindi and keep it simple. Gita Gopinath’s Diwali look was indeed a tribute to her Indian heritage.
Gita Gopinath shared the pictures from the Diwali celebration on social media. In her X post, she wrote, “Thank you President Biden @POTUS for a warm celebration of Diwali at the @WhiteHouse – celebrating light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Happy Diwali!”

“Saree is so elegant in any setting,” a netizen commented. Another wrote, “Such a proud moment! Delighted to see Diwali celebrated at the White House, spreading the spirit of light and unity. Happy Diwali!” An X user wrote, “A Bindi goes well with Saari, no?” “Gita you are beautiful in all the ways,” another commented.

Meanwhile, the Diwali celebration at the White House was attended by more than 600 eminent Indian Americans, including Congressman Shri Thanedar, US Surgeon General Vice Admiral Vivek H Murthy and the First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Gita Gopinath, among others.
While addressing the gathering President Biden said, “As President, I have been honoured to host the biggest Diwali receptions ever at the White House. To me, it means a great deal. As Senator, Vice President, and President; South Asian Americans have been key members of my staff.”
