Each year, Teachers’ Day is celebrated on September 5, which is also the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India. In honour and remembrance of Dr Radhakrishnan, Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year on September 5 which coincides with his birthday. Here we list down some interesting facts about Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan every Indian should know.

1. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 15, 1888, in Thiruttani in present-day Tamil Nadu. He was born to Sarvepalli Veeraswami and Sithamma, and was the fourth child out of their six children. His family has roots in Nellore’s Sarvepalli village (which is in Andhra Pradesh). Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s father worked as a subordinate revenue official for a local landlord.
2. At the age of 16, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan married Sivakamu, who was his distant cousin. They were married for 53 years, till Sivakamu died in 1956. Dr. Radhakrishnan and Sivakamu had five daughters and a son together. Over the years, their grandkids and great-grandkids have made a mark in several careers including medicine, history, law, business, among others.

3. Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman is a great-grandnephew of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. At an event in 2023, replying to a question VVS Laxman had said that he was related to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan from his mother’s side.

4. During this lifetime, Dr Radhakrishnan worked as a philosopher, statesman, and politician. Prior to becoming the President of India, he as was the second ambassador of India to the Soviet Union (between 1949 to 1952), followed by being the first Vice President of India (between 1952 to 1962).

5. However, at heart Dr Radhakrishnan was an academician and he taught at various colleges. He was the fourth Vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) between 1939 to 1948; he also held the position of the second Vice-chancellor of Andhra University between 1931 to 1936.

6. Not just this, Dr Radhakrishnan also held the position of King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at the University of Calcutta (between the years 1921 to 1932), and he was the Spalding Chair of Eastern Religion and Ethics at the University of Oxford from 1936 to 1952, according to Wikipedia. He is considered as an influential and distinguished scholar of religion and philosophy in the 20th century.

7. Dr Radhakrishnan distinguished career also includes leading the Indian delegation of the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In 1948, he was elected as the Chairman of UNESCO’s executive board.
8. After becoming the second President of India, once when Dr Radhakrishnan’s students and friends wanted to celebrate his birthday as a grand affair, he did not agree. Instead, he told them that he would be happier if they celebrated his birthday as Teachers’ Day, as he regarded teachers to play a crucial role in people’s lives. He also believed that “teachers should be the best minds in the country.” And so, since then Dr Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary has been celebrated as Teachers’ Day in India.

9. In 1954, Dr Radhakrishnan was awarded India’s highest civilian award– the Bharat Ratna for his immense contributions to the country’s development.
10. He was also nominated for the prestigious Nobel Prize 27 times, which included 16 nominations for the Nobel Prize in literature, and 11 for the Nobel Peace prize.
11. During his lifetime, he was felicitated with several awards including the Templeton Prize, Order of Merit, and more.

12. Dr Radhakrishnan also wrote several books during his lifetime. Some of his notable works include ‘Indian Philosophy’ (1923-27), ‘The Philosophy of the Upanishads’ (1924), ‘Eastern Religions and Western Thought’ (1939), among others.
13. He passed away on April 17, 1975, at the age of 86 in Chennai, India.
